How to Calculate Pesticide Rates for Areas Less Than an Acre

Most pesticide labels list rates per acre — but what if you’re spraying a smaller area? It’s important to adjust the rate correctly so you don’t over or under apply product Here’s a simple way to break it down:

Step 1: Measure the Area

First, determine the square footage of the area you plan to spray. Multiply length × width to get square feet. If the area isn’t a perfect square or rectangle, measure smaller sections and add them together. A reasonable estimate works fine for rounded or irregular spaces.

Step 2: Convert to Acres

Divide your total square footage by 43,560 (the number of square feet in one acre). This gives you the portion of an acre you’re treating.

Step 3: Adjust the Per-Acre Rate

Check the pesticide label for the recommended rate per acre. Multiply that rate by your partial acre amount from Step 2. That gives you the total product needed for your entire area.

Step 4: Calculate Product Per Tank

If it takes multiple tanks to cover your area, divide the total product amount by the number of tanks you’ll spray. That tells you how much product to add to each tank.

1. Your area measures 100 ft × 250 ft
100 × 250 = 25,000 sq ft

2. Convert to acres:
25,000 ÷ 43,560 = 0.57 acre

3. The pesticide label rate is 4 pounds per acre
4 × 0.57 = 2.28 pounds total product needed

4. If it takes 5 tanks to spray the area:
2.28 ÷ 5 = 0.46 pounds per tank

Taking a few minutes to do the math helps ensure accurate application, better results, and no wasted product.
